CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Rosie and I headed back to our cottage for a quick stop before we headed out again, swapping the golf cart for my small rental this time. It was easy enough to find the pawn shop, which was located at the very far end of Smithson Street just like Ollie had told us.
The shopfront was unassuming, and inside was dark and slightly dingy. I suppose this place didn't do a roaring business like most pawn shops in larger cities did.
There was a morose-looking man behind the counter who looked at us hopefully as soon as we walked in.
âAre you here to sell something?â he asked. "Or maybe pick up a bargain?"
The man was of average height, slightly chubby, with balding, dark hair. He looked to be in his late forties, and I wondered briefly how he'd ended up in this place.
Rosie shook her head. "No. We're here to ask about a watch you bought recently."
The man raised one eyebrow.
"I'm Greg," he said. "Which watch are we talking about?"
"A man named Albert sold it," Rosie said, and she went on to describe him.
"And why are you interested?" Greg asked us.
Rosie and I exchanged a glance. I fished out my private investigator's license from my bag and showed him.
"There's been a murder at the retirement resort a few miles down from here," I told him.
He nodded. "Heard about that one on the news. But what's the watch got to do with it?"
"We're just asking a few questions," Rosie said. "We're not sure how the watch is connected, or how Albert is, for that matter."
Greg shook his head and pushed my license back to me. "No can do," he said, spreading his hands on the counter in front of him. "I don't talk about customers."
"But it would help in a murder investigation," I explained. "We're not sure how it's connected, but it might be."
The man leaned back and crossed his arms over his chest. He was silent, not saying a word.
Rosie leaned over to me. "I don't have any cash on me, boss. Do you?"
I shook my head no. I should have thought of that. Cash can come in handy in situations like this. Rosie fished out her wallet and thumbed through it hopefully.
âI wonder if I'd placed some bills in here by accident," she explained, but all she could pull out was a $5 bill. She pushed it across the counter to Greg, who just looked at it and laughed. He shook his head.
"You'll have to do better than that."
"We don't have anything more on us," Rosie explained. "Everywhere takes cards now. I only have my credit card." And then she brightened up. "Maybe I could use my card to buy some stuff from here." She looked around. "If I buy a few expensive pieces, will you talk to us then?"
"Oh, no, Rosie," I said. "You don't have to do that. We're not getting paid for this."
"We're just helping out the sheriff for free, but it'll look good on our resume," Rosie said.
